How HTML5 games run without a download

Every game on this site runs inside the browser tab you already have open. Nothing is downloaded to your machine, nothing is installed, and there is no launcher sitting in the background afterwards. That is worth explaining properly, because “no download” sounds like marketing and is actually a technical description.

What is actually happening

A modern browser can do most of what a small game needs. It can draw thousands of moving sprites, render 3D through WebGL, play positional audio, read a gamepad and keep a steady frame rate. HTML5 games are built against those browser features directly, so the browser is the game engine. There is no separate program to install because the program you need is already running.

When you press play on a game page here, the browser fetches the game files and starts them in a sandboxed frame. Those files are cached, which is why a game you have played before starts faster the second time.

Why games do not start automatically

You will notice that game pages show a cover image and a play button rather than loading the game immediately. That is deliberate. Autoplaying every game would mean downloading several megabytes and starting audio before you decided whether you wanted to play. Loading on click keeps the page fast and quiet, and it means opening five game pages in tabs costs almost nothing.

What the browser will not do

Two honest limits. Games run in a sandbox with restricted permissions, so a browser game cannot reach your files or the rest of your system — good for safety, but it also caps what these games can be. And performance is shared: a 3D game competes with every other tab for the same GPU. If a game stutters, closing tabs usually helps more than changing the game’s own settings.
